Stories from the Beach

I made this blog for the purpose of surfers who might want to find their photo.
You don't always get to see what you look like from shore.
I've dated all the posts, and hopefully you can recognize yourself - by board or suit or stance, or whatever.

Please send me a message if you want a copy of your image!

With my new work schedule, I can finally come out on weekends and not be drowned by schoolwork. This was a nice escape on a Sunday where the forecast was calling for rain, and luckily I didn't get a drop on me.
Shooting has been a challenge lately since my autofocus stopped working. Trying to take  action shots from far away on a heavy 70-200 isn't always easy, and as a result some shots are not totally clear.
Must visit the camera shop soon.

Dec 31 - big moon high tide

What a crazy adventure of a day. Showed up mid-morning before high tide and I found a nice perch on a log to shoot from. The tide came in quick and the waves were crashing right underneath me. So thankful for those trees I was sitting on... I had nowhere else to go and ended up being stranded on this teeny piece of beach, unable to go left or right. Not to mention having to run into the ocean to grab our things that got carried away by a rogue wave! What an insane last day for 2020!
(needless to say I didn't get THAT many pictures...)

I know, I know. It's been far too long, and this blog is no stranger to neglection right now. Looks like the last time I posted was August, but that's definitely not the last time I was at the beach shooting surf.
I still find time to get out there, but the truth is I just don't have the energy to keep it up right now and continue posting as often as I used to. School is taking up a lot of my time and, surprisingly, it's voluntary. I'm really into this program, but that doesn't mean I'm losing my creative flare here. I still want to connect with the community and share your photos, it's just hard to get into it right now. I'm still here, I promise. Just on the sidelines. <3

Saturday August 29 (it's been a while)

I've definitely been out shooting since my last post in January... not sure why I've been slacking on the posting, likely my passion has been clouded by the hardcore online schooling that consumed me 7 days a week.

Coming here on a weekend was bonkers. Forgive the rant, but I truly believe covid has ruined this beach forever. It pretty much looks like Pandora at the height of the pandemic. Have you seen it on weekends lately? Expect the parking lot to be overflowing up the road and your tent may be 2 inches from your neighbour. People are camping out up by the outhouses because the beach is full. I remember summer weekends (just last year, for example) we would show up to an abundance of tent plots, you'd still have your own space, and the atmosphere was peaceful and quiet.
I feel bad for anyone hiking on the JDF showing up to that mess and hoping to camp there at all.
(I guess there is a silver lining though, these people aren't surfers so the water isn't all that crowded.)

In the end, really, it's just a bunch of kids having fun - and if I were one of those 20 yr olds,
I'd be having the time of my life too, zero complaints.
Maybe I'm just getting old. Crowds annoy me. Here's hoping the fall and winter will be better.

I just learned that my school application got through by the skin of my teeth... my determination pretty much got me in the pool and now I have to hunker down and hit the books big time. I'll be working days, nights and weekends, but I was so happy to have come out here this morning for an early full moon set / sun rise session. Sitting in the sun shooting the surf brought me so much peace. This is what it's all about.

I just found a batch of raw photos from a rainy beach day. Why haven't I edited them yet? Jeez Louise I'm getting too lost in the cobwebs of everyday life!

Well, here's to my first post in 6-ish months. I'm sure I've been out shooting since, but with batteries dying unexpectedly and just not showing up at the right place at the right time, I felt like nothing was worth posting. That and I've turned myself into a hermit since school & studying has taken over my life. Anywho, Saturday was a great day with super sun, glassy water and tons of happy faces!

What a crazy day! I wish I could have a better means of showing you how massive the waves looked from shore. You'll just have to take my word for it. :)
